Local and national designers, alongside local and national boutiques, will gather together to promote and inspire our rising stars. Models, make-up and hair stylists will showcase their talents on the runway, while encouraging locals and visitors to explore the creative talents of Birmingham.

• How long have you been located in Pepper Place? Our opening night was August 24th, 2008. Nashville musician Sally Barris performed to a crowd of 70 people. The next morning (Monday, August, 25th) we opened at 6AM for normal business.

• Tell us a little about your business:  We are a high-end coffeehouse whose aim is to create a perfect cup of coffee. We roast the coffee in-house and take special care in the preparation of drinks. We also serve breakfast and lunch, cater events in our space, and host live music.

• What do you love most about working in Pepper Place? The feeling of community is the most attractive aspect of Pepper Place. We love seeing familiar customers coming through every day.

• What would you like people to know about The Red Cat Coffeehouse? We are making a big push this year toward a new business model called “direct trade.” This means that we are visiting coffee farms around the world and setting up a direct relationship with farmers who use fair employment arrangements and sustainable farming practices. We’ve already visited farms in Panama and are expecting a large shipment from there in a few months. It’s a goal for most roasters to be able to engage in direct trade, but so far, we are the only roaster in town to make it a reality.

“Never in a million years did I think I would open a garden shop in downtown Birmingham, Ala.,” remembers Charlie Thigpen.

Two years ago, the landscape designer and former garden editor at Southern Living magazine thought the best place for his new Garden Gallery was also the most predictable: He would locate the shop in one of the suburban neighborhoods outside the city center, where new construction—and newly planted landscapes—flourish.

The same can be said for most farmers. Winter is a time to nurture root vegetables, or sow cover crops, repair equipment, order seed, plough empty fields and get things ready for the busy season ahead. It’s a time of preparation.

As a farmer’s market manager, I spend the winter months preparing, too. I pour over our annual budget, plan our calendar, schedule chefs and musicians; our board of directors meets for the first time in the new year and helps plan the upcoming season. Committees begin to consolidate sponsorships and finalize special events. T-shirt designs, newspaper ads and posters begin to take shape. It’s also a time to take inventory in the warehouse and spend time counting and repairing broken tents and tables; sound systems are serviced and cables and extension cords are untangled.

But winter can be a deceptive time of year with its short daylight hours and long nights. It often seems as if it will never end and time can stand still. Busy market days seem far away. But suddenly, it seems, I find my desk awash in vendor applications and myself struggling over decisions- decisions on where to put folks on Saturday mornings. I find that I may not have enough tents after all. I wake up during the night thinking “where I will put who and will this fit there? What if it rains? What if the wind blows tents down the street?” And that’s when I realize that winter is almost over and it’s time for another market season to begin!

So as we go about our wintertime activities, whether on the farm or in our backyards, those of us at Pepper Place Saturday Market look forward to seeing you at the market this year. Our opening day for the 2012 season is Saturday, April 14th from 7:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.- rain or shine!
