Top 10 Reasons Charlie Thigpen’s Garden Gallery is Worth a Visit

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

Off the main parking lot of Pepper Place, an oasis greets customers Monday through Friday and on busy Saturdays during the Pepper Place Farmers’ Market.  Tucked in the corner and down a flower laden path, you will not want to miss the charming courtyard and shop of Charlie and Cindy Thigpen, owners of the Garden Gallery.  Upon entering the relaxing courtyard, you will immediately slow your pace to absorb all the sights, sounds and fragrant smells of this blooming heaven.  Here are our top 10 reasons why you should not miss a visit to this charming “mom and pop” garden shop:

  1. The tranquil sounds of cool, splashing water trickling from the focal point water feature.  Be sure to drop your bags and take a rest on the comfortable ball seats nestled around the fountain.
  1. Friendly smiles and knowledgeable advice on what to plant in your garden.  Usually, Charlie is always on hand to lend an ear and offer tips to questions from patrons, giving that personal touch of customer service.
  1. The variety of selections of annuals, perennials, herbs and vegetables.  Surely one (or more!) would be perfect in your landscape.  In addition to popular plants available, there are always several unusual and unexpected surprises to browse.
  1. Garden gifts and whimsical yard ornaments crafted by local artists await you inside and outside the shop! Don’t miss the selection of sketches, oil paintings, and award-winning photography. Several choices abound and range in price points to suit any shopper’s wallet.
  1. Ring the bell!  The tank bell that is.  Created by a local craftsman and perfect for hanging on your porch to call children in from a day at play.  See if you can find the one to ring in our courtyard!
  1. On busy days, the convenience of an outside tent where you can purchase your items with check or cash.  Of course, inside the shop takes credit cards as well.
  1. Three words…the fan mister.  This attraction you will not want to miss.  Young and old cannot resist standing in front of the oscillating misty breeze!
  1. The mosaic matron found by the courtyard fence cradling a flowerpot overflowing with seasonal color.  Presiding over the creatively designed borders, she seems to whisper ideas and “go bys” for customers to fashion in their own garden.
  1. Clever uses of discarded materials such as bicycles and worn garden tools, becoming planters and yard art.  See all the tired, ordinary items repurposed into amazing treasure!
  1. The wide variety of houseplants found inside the shop.  Shoppers can find a range between 4 inch ferns to 8 foot fiddle leaf figs.  An added bonus?  Supporting the local growers in that 99.9% of the plants inside and out are cultivated right here in the state of Alabama!

Charlie Thigpen’s Garden Gallery is located in Pepper Place, 2805 2nd Ave. S, Ste 300, Birmingham, Alabama 35233.  The phone number is (205) 328-1000 and the email is gardenersgallery@att.net.  STORE HOURS are Monday—Friday 8:00 – 6:00 and Saturday from 8:00 – 4:00. The Red Cat Coffee House – Grab a cup o’ Joe!

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Recently I’ve been battling an addiction. It’s true, I’m addicted to White Chocolate Frappes from The Red Cat Coffee House. In fact, I’m so addicted I’ve recently been buying these wonderful concoctions on a daily basis! If you’ve never tried out the coffee at the Red Cat Coffee House, go there now and grab a cup – trust me.

The Red Cat, as we’ll call it for now, was started by Kirk Summers and Erin Isbell back in 2008 “right before the economy crashed!” However, before starting The Red Cat (previously known as O Kafes) Kirk and Erin began roasting small batches of coffee via a home roaster. They eventually began to sell this coffee at the Pepper Place Saturday Market, at one point selling on average of 80+ bags a week. When the pair finally decided to take the plunge and start a coffee shop, they picked the most logical location: Martin Biscuit Building in Pepper Place!

Today if you walk into the doors of the Red Cat, you’ll immediately notice that they’ve got quite the operation. The first thing you notice is the large industrial looking piece of equipment on the floor, this bad boy is the coffee roaster (bought on eBay, of course). The Red Cat staff fires this beast up periodically throughout the week to roast coffee beans as they’re needed. Speaking of coffee beans, The Red Cat has really special beans. All coffee beans purchased by Kirk and Erin are fair-trade certified which, in short, means that the farmers & workers at the source (the farms) will always be getting fairly compensated for their work (More info on Fair-Trade). Kirk says that “although the coffee beans are more expensive, you end up with a better grade coffee bean”. And, of course, a better coffee bean means better coffee.

As if it wasn’t already obvious, the folks down at The Red Cat are awesome at making great tasting coffee…but what if you don’t like coffee? It may seem odd to us Java lovers, but there are a few folks out there who don’t have a taste for the bean. If you are one of these non-coffee-loving people, don’t you worry, The Red Cat has you covered. They serve smoothies(a great Frappe alternative) and of course they have all the usually coffee shop treats such as coffee cake, muffins, and danishes. They also pull out all the stops for lunch time offering pretty much a full menu of sandwiches and salads. Oh yeah, and they serve beer!

Also on the agenda for the Red Cat is live music! The word on the street is you can catch a live show down at the little coffee shop almost every weekend. They’ve got a permanent stage there, and the place can actually hold around 100 people. However, don’t come to the RC if you’re looking to rock out, they’re really into featuring indie, folk and acoustic artists…so chill. Being such a nice space also means that the Red Cat is the perfect place for all types of parties (rehearsal dinners, Birthdays, grad parties, etc) – they’ve got your drink and your food. You can check their website for who will be playing each week, and you can always make inquiries to reserve the place (or ask any questions at all) by emailing roastmaster@okafes.com

That’s it for the Red Cat! Make sure to try my favorite drink of all, the White Chocolate Mocha Frappe!

The New Forest Center

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

There’s no denying that modern life in the ‘Ham can be very hectic, stressful, and demanding. And, while that’s true of nearly every city in this great country, we have something that they don’t have; The New Forest Center!

Our full name is The New Forest Center For Contemplative Living and that pretty much tells the story. We teach a marvelous assortment of unconventional exercises, arts, skills and disciplines designed to keep us in shape and in tune with the flow of day-to-day life. Best of all, everything we do is easy to learn and fun to play. That’s right, I said “play.” And couldn’t we all stand to inject a little more play into our busy lives?

The arts we teach come from the worlds great contemplative traditions. We offer regular classes in Tai Chi, Qigong (think Yoga without pretzel-postures), Kung-Fu and various forms of meditation. Workshops in Chinese Calligraphy, Mystical Music, Contemplative Prayer and Poetry will be offered throughout the year. And, it’s all done the New Forest Way.

The New Forest® Way is our signature approach to these unique activities. It’s a modern and avant-garde approach that allows for greater access to ancient secrets and the inner workings of the contemplative arts. That way, you’re able to reap a whole host of benefits much faster than usual. Stress reduction is only part of it. Tai Chi promotes healing, lifts your spirits and clears your head. Meditation gets you in touch with your intuitive and creative side, while Qigong fortifies your strengths and diminishes your weaknesses. Taken separately or together, they can give you the all-important edge in a turbulent world.

Our curriculum changes slightly from month to month just to keep things lively. No uniforms are required and we supply the meditation cushions when needed. Individual classes are only ten bucks each and we usually have some sort of special going on. The average Tai Chi/Qigong class is 30 minutes long with meditation classes running for 45 minutes. We try to make it as easy as possible for you to come in and play with us.

Look, it’s this simple: In the time it takes for you to drink too much coffee and fret over the day’s headlines, you can —instead— harmonize your talent, vision, body, mind and spirit into a unified whole. You can look great and feel better. Then, instead of life getting smaller, darker and depressing, it’ll get bigger, brighter, funnier and more rewarding by the minute. If you’re ready for that, then we’re ready for you.

Visit our website at www.TheNewForestCenter.com for more information and to see the current schedule of classes. You can also call us at (205) 527-1198.

C’mon down to the Pepper Place! We look forward to meeting you.

AlabamaGoods.com Joins Forces with the General Store Bringing the Essence and Culture of our State to Historic Pepper Place

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Wine bottles made into wind chimes, metal shaped into home décor, and pens made from rifle shells… these are just a few of the unique items brought to you by AlabamaGoods.com. The beauty of these products is that they are all made by the local artists of our sweet home, Alabama, and they can now be purchased at the General Store in historic Pepper Place!

AlabamaGoods.com is the place that provides the “planet’s largest selection of Alabama made products,” said co-owner Sherry Hartley. She and Beth Williams teamed up in October 2007 after they noticed a remarkable gap in the market for locally made products. The demand for such products continued increasing, “so we took the opportunity and ran with it,” said Hartley. They create gift baskets that are representative of Alabama, they are a great source for corporate and executive gifts, and recently, more and more people have been turning to AlabamaGoods.com for bridal gifts.

Initially Hartley and Williams primarily sold their products through their website, but beginning May 2010 they joined forces with the General Store in Pepper Place. Cookbooks, t-shirts, and a few food items are what once filled the store, but much has changed since May. You can now find jewelry, pottery, garden ornaments, baby gifts, a variety of Alabama-made food products, and many more items that are “representative of our states culture and essence” now fill the walls of the store. “Before this collaboration, the General Store was screaming out for Alabama’s personality, and AlabamaGoods.com was the perfect match,” said Hartley.

Pottery is what makes up a bulk of the products in the store. You can find anything from decorative art, to baking dishes, to salt and pepper shakers made by potters across the state. According to Hartley their number one seller is a garlic zester made by Lynne Killion who is located here in Birmingham. An additional noteworthy artist in this category is Tena Payne, from Leeds, Ala., whose dinnerware is used at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, and at Birmingham’s very own Hot and Hot Fish Club on a daily basis. Payne teamed up with her husband and son to establish a company called Earthborn Studios, making the production of her products a family affair. You too can own some of this artist’s pottery by visiting the Alabama Goods website or the retail store in Pepper Place.

In addition to the pottery you can find several unique pieces in a variety of categories, many of which come from a husband and wife team: Steve and Sally Smith from New London, Ala. The products made by Steve include wind chimes and jewelry made from recycled wine bottles, loofahs grown by Smith himself, and birdhouses and benches made from reclaimed wood. Sally is a photographer who uses her nature shots for greeting cards. Not only can you purchase one of her photos for a birthday card, thank you note, etc., it can also be used as frameable art.

One thing you can count on when shopping at AlabamaGoods.com is the products being of top quality. Hartley and Williams are very selective as to what products they choose to feature in their shop, and all must meet certain criteria before being selected. They pay close attention to the production process of each potential product. For non-food items they prefer to use vendors who utilize earth friendly production methods, especially in the area of packing materials. They do not like to contract any vendors who use plastic or resin. For food items, they must be made in a commercially-approved kitchen. They are extremely particular when evaluating the ingredients used and the quality of each product. Bottom line – you are guaranteed to get the best quality possible when making purchases from AlabamaGoods.com.

Hartley is in the process of transitioning her home to being decorated mainly with natural art, which has caused the rooms in her house to “take on a whole new feel,” she said. If you are someone who truly appreciates natural art and would like to support the local artists, you will adore the products found at AlabamaGoods.com. There truly is a difference in the quality of the Alabama-made products found in their store versus the quality of items that are imported and mass produced, according to Hartley. But, don’t take her word for it… come by the General Store in Pepper Place today and see for yourself!

Charlie Thigpen’s Garden Gallery is Birmingham’s Retail Garden Shop

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

As I interview the various tenants of the Pepper Place area, I’m beginning to see a trend. Every single person who owns a business here is extremely passionate about what they do. This trend was further  confirmed this week as I spoke with Charlie Thigpen, garden enthusiast and owner of the Garden Gallery – a retail garden boutique specializing in unique garden items.

Before our interview I had never visited the Garden Gallery but after we talked (for well over an hour) I know for sure I’ll be returning. Charlie and his wife Cindy (as well as their Labrador Chaz) opened the Garden Galley back in December of 2009 and since then have begun to turn their little slice of Pepper Place into a garden of Eden for all to enjoy. See below:

Charlie says that gardening, to him, is all about creating a wonderful environment. His gardening style is unconventional and “very anti cookie-cutter”. This is quite obvious if you take a look around at his shop. You’ll see hundreds of flowers and veggies all growing together in a way that just works. Take a look at the above picture and you’ll understand what I mean when I say that Charlie specializes in container gardening. He loves to utilize various containers to give his garden designs some flare. These containers range in size from your normal potted plant, to enormous one-ton planters that can darn near hold a whole garden.

You could literally spend hours walking around Charlie’s garden looking at the various natural creations. However, if you want the tools to do it yourself, you’ll need to go inside. Once inside his store you’ll soon find yourself overwhelmed with all the cool stuff around you. I think I entertained myself for well over ten minutes by tricking a venus fly trap ($6.50) into biting my pen (cruel, I know)! I also got a hands on demonstration of these really cool decorative porch items called Fire Pots ($17-$95) which are one of the shop’s best selling items. You’ll find planters, hanging baskets, seeds & cuttings, and really just about anything garden related you could possibly dream of.

In conclusion, you’ve got to go down and visit the Charlie’s Garden Gallery at Pepper Place. All the pictures in the world couldn’t accurately show you how beautiful the garden there really is. Nor could this article begin to delve into the enormous amount of unique garden items Charlie has in stock. Pepper Place is so much more than a Farmers Market. The Garden Gallery is one of those shops that makes the Pepper Place area an amazing place to visit regardless of whether it is Saturday morning or Wednesday evening (or any other time).

Thanks so much for showing me around Charlie & Cindy, I throughly enjoyed the tour and great conversation! Oh, and yes, this is the Charlie Thigpen that wrote for Southern Living for 29 years – I told you he knew his stuff.

P.S. Don’t let Charlie talk you in to trying the Ghost Peppers, I almost fell for it.
