Most of us know and love Pepper Place for its ability to bring people together. We enjoy the area as an acclaimed summer and fall farmer’s market, as a convenient lunch destination to meet friends, and for its really great music and entertainment venues. We’re excited that Pepper Place has succeeded in creating a central location for friends and family to enjoy, and that it continues to thrive each year. There are many great people, businesses, retailers, and organizations that define Pepper Place as an up-and-coming center of commerce, and also as Birmingham’s design and entertainment district. You may not have heard of many of these businesses and you don’t get to see them on a regular basis, but we want to give you a glimpse of the people that make Pepper Place the wonderful place that it is.

- How long have you been located in Pepper Place? Our opening night was August 24th, 2008. Nashville musician Sally Barris performed to a crowd of 70 people. The next morning (Monday, August, 25th) we opened at 6AM for normal business.
- Tell us a little about your business: We are a high-end coffeehouse whose aim is to create a perfect cup of coffee. We roast the coffee in-house and take special care in the preparation of drinks. We also serve breakfast and lunch, cater events in our space, and host live music.
- What do you love most about working in Pepper Place? The feeling of community is the most attractive aspect of Pepper Place. We love seeing familiar customers coming through every day.
- What would you like people to know about The Red Cat Coffeehouse? We are making a big push this year toward a new business model called “direct trade.” This means that we are visiting coffee farms around the world and setting up a direct relationship with farmers who use fair employment arrangements and sustainable farming practices. We’ve already visited farms in Panama and are expecting a large shipment from there in a few months. It’s a goal for most roasters to be able to engage in direct trade, but so far, we are the only roaster in town to make it a reality.
